If you want your children to become better prepared to deal with life’s problems, please don’t be an overprotective parent. Expose your children to a reasonable amount of challenges, but also remember that they need your protection, empathy, caring, and compassion. Find the correct balance.
Always ask yourself two questions:
- Am I challenging them enough?
- Am I caring enough?
Some parents, whilst trying to build strong personalities in their children, will find themselves abusing them emotionally by not showing them enough understanding.
Other parents, whilst trying to be caring parents, end up becoming overprotective and destructive.
The beauty of Taekwondo is that children will be exposed to challenges, and they will have moments of doubt, fear, failure, etc., but this will make them better prepared for life, yet only under the condition that these difficulties will be accompanied with empathy, compassion, protection and support from both you as a parent as well as the coach.
